News Regulation and Politics ♡

The Guardian and Observer
The Guardian is a daily newspaper published by the Guardian group and owned by the Scott Trust
The Observer is the Sunday newspaper published by the Guardian group. It's basically the guardian but released on a Sunday with more of a focus on investigative, long-term journalism. But it will still report on immediate news. It's the oldest running Sunday newspapering dates back to 1791

The Guardian and Observer follow five principles:
  1. Develop ideas that help us improve the world, not just critique it
  2. Collaborate with readers and others to have a greater impact
  3. Diversify to have richer reporting from a representative newsroom
  4. Be meaningful in all our work
  5. Report fairly on people as well as power and find things out. This underpins all of the above
How powerful are newspapers?
Newspapers are owned by individuals with their own political and social agendas and these ideologies are reflected in the editorial content of the papers

Ideology: a system of ideas and ideals, especially one which forms the basis of economic or political theory and policy

The Guardian/Observer is a LIBERAL newspaper however it tends to subtly favour labour

Daily mirror VS Daily express

  • Daily mirror is liberal, Daily express is right wing (conservative)
  • Daily express: 'Be ready' - the imperative shows readers should feel prepared and views are implied to be positive.
  • Daily mirror: sounds aggressive. 'I' - personal pronoun, portrays Farage as selfish and only cares about what he wants
  • Daily mirror: picture of Farage makes him look angry and aggressive, reflects the daily mirror's negative views on him that may transfer onto readers beliefs
  • Daily express: holiday advert - suggests the target audience is from a class who has a disposable income to spend on holidays.
  • Daily mirror: Soft news article on Meghan Markle with large image- reflects the working class target audience who are interested in celebrities life.
  • Daily express font: old english font bold, serif style - reflect a middle class target audience. However the tabloid style newspaper with soft news suggests that it still appeals to working class. Blue colour throughout the page - conservative colour.
  • Daily mirror: bold, clear font appeals reflects working class target audience as it is easy to read and informal. The red reflects the tabloid style with soft news because it connotes drama, controversy and anger
